1Kings 5

1 And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in··the··stead··of his father; for Hiram loved David all the days.
2 And Solomon sent unto Hiram, saying,
3 Thou knowest David my father, that he was· not ·able to build a house for the name of Jehovah his God, because of1 the wars that were surrounding him, until Jehovah put them under the soles of his feet.
4 But now, Jehovah my God has given me rest; from all around there is no opponent, and no evil coming··upon me.
5 And behold me, saying to build a house for the name of Jehovah my God, as Jehovah spoke to David my father, saying, Thy son whom I will put instead··of thee on thy throne, he shall build the house for My name.
6 And now, command thou, and they shall cut··off for me cedars from Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants, and the wage of thy servants I will give thee, according··to all that thou shalt say; for thou knowest that there is no man among us who knows how to cut··off wood as the Zidonians.
7 And it was, as Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he was· exceedingly ·glad, and said, Blessed be Jehovah today, who has given unto David a wise son over this great people.
8 And Hiram sent unto Solomon, saying, I have heard that which thou hast sent unto me; I will do all thy delight, in wood of cedars and in wood of firs.
9 My servants shall bring· them ·down from Lebanon to the sea; and I shall set them as floats in the sea to the place that thou shalt send unto me, and they will break· them ·up there, and thou shalt carry them, and thou shalt do my delight to give bread for my house.
10 And it was, that Hiram gave Solomon wood of cedars and wood of firs, all his delight.
11 And Solomon gave to Hiram twenty thousand cor2 of wheat for food to his house, and twenty cor of beaten oil. Thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.
12 And Jehovah gave wisdom to Solomon, as He spoke unto him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and the two cut a covenant.
13 And King Solomon took··up a tribute from all Israel, and the tribute was thirty thousand men.
14 And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand in a month by changes; a month they were in Lebanon, two months in their house; and Adoniram was over the tribute.
15 And Solomon had seventy thousand who bore a burden, and eighty thousand who hewed stone in the mountain,
16 besides the princes of the supervisors for Solomon who were over the work3, three thousand and three hundred, who had··dominion over the people doing the work.
17 And the king commanded, and they brought out great stones, costly stones, to lay··the··foundation of the house with hewn stones.
18 And the builders of Solomon and the builders of Hiram and the Gebalites4 did carve· them ·out, and prepared the wood and the stones to build the house.

1literally, “from the faces of”

2“A cor contained ten baths” (AC 10262:4).

3The word for “work,” twice in this verse, is closely related to the word for “angel” in Hebrew, which reflects the concept of use.

4men from the town of Gebal in Phoenecia, Hiram’s kingdom, who seem to have been knowledgeable in filling cracks (see Ezekiel 27:9)
