Isaiah 10

1 Woe to those who state statutes of iniquity, and to those who write writings of mischief,
2 to distort the cause of the poor, and to snatch··away the judgment of the afflicted of My people, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may plunder the orphans!
3 And what will you do in the day of visitation, and in the vastation which shall come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? And where will you leave your glory?
4 He who will not bow··down shall fall under the bound one and under the killed ones. For all this His anger is not turned··back, but His hand is stretched··out still.
5 Woe to Assyria, the staff of My anger, and the rod of My indignation, which is in their hand!
6 Into a hypocritical nation I will send him, and against the people of My wrath I will command him, to spoil for spoil, and to plunder for plunder, and to set them for a trampling as the clay of the streets.
7 But he does not consider rightly, and his heart does not think rightly, for to blot··out is in his heart, and to cut··off nations not a few.
8 For he says, Are not my princes altogether kings?
9 Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpadh? Is not Samaria as Damascus?
10 As my hand has found the kingdoms of the vain··god, and their carved images were from Samaria and from Jerusalem,
11 as I have done to Samaria and her vain··gods, shall I not likewise do to Jerusalem and her images?
12 But it shall be, when the Lord has accomplished every deed of His in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, I will visit upon the fruit of the greatness of the heart of the king of Assyria, and the splendor of his self-exalting eyes.
13 For he says, By the power of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I understand; I have removed the borders of the peoples, and I have pillaged their fortune; and as a mighty, powerful··one I have brought··down those who are dwelling there.
14 And my hand has··found, as a nest, the belongings of the peoples; and as one gathers forsaken eggs, so I have gathered all the earth; and there was not one that flew··away on the wing, or that gaped with the mouth, or that chirped.
15 Shall the axe vaunt itself against him who hews with it? Shall the saw magnify itself against him who moves it? As if the scepter should wave him who lifts· it ·up; as if the rod should lift··up him who is not wood.
16 Therefore the Lord, Lord of Armies, shall send among his fat1 ones leanness; and under his glory shall He burn a burning, as the burning of fire.
17 And the Light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy··One for a flame; and He shall burn, and devour his thornbush and his briar in one day.
18 And the glory of his forest, and his Carmel2, from the soul, and even··to the flesh, shall He consume··completely; and it shall be as when a standard-bearer melts.
19 And what··is··left of the trees of his forest shall be a number so small that a lad may write them.
20 And it shall be in that day, that he who is left of Israel, and escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more lean on him who smote him, but shall lean on Jehovah, the Holy··One of Israel, in truth.
21 He who is left shall return, he who is left of Jacob, to the mighty God.
22 For even if thy people, O Israel, shall be as the sand of the sea, those who are left of them shall return; the complete end is decided, overflowing with justice.
23 For a complete end and decision shall the Lord Jehovih of Armies make in the midst of all the land.
24 Therefore thus says the Lord Jehovih of Armies: Fear not, O My people, who dwellest in Zion, because of the Assyrian; with his staff he shall smite thee, and his rod he shall lift··up against thee, in the way of Egypt.
25 For still very··short ·little while, and My indignation shall be consummated, and My anger, on··account··of their wearing··down.
26 And Jehovah of Armies shall stir··up against him a whip, as the blow upon Midian at the rock of Oreb, and His rod over the sea; and He shall lift· it ·up on the way of Egypt.
27 And it shall be in that day, his burden shall be removed from on thy shoulder, and his yoke from on thy neck; and the yoke shall be destroyed on··account··of the oil.
28 He will come against Aiath; he will cross into Migron; at Michmash he will muster his weapons.
29 They will cross··through Mabarah3; Gibea4 will be our place··to··pass··the··night; Ramah is··frightened; Gibea of Saul flees.
30 Exult with thy voice, O daughter of Gallim; attend, O Laish; O afflicted Anathoth!
31 Madmenah has fled··away; they who dwell in Gebim muster··together.
32 Yet today he shall stand in Nob; the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem, shall wave its hand.
33 Behold, the Lord, Jehovah of Armies, shall lop··off the branch with what is terrifying; and those high of stature shall be hewn··down, and the haughty shall be made··low.
34 And He shall hew··down the thickets of the forest with iron, and by the Magnificent one shall Lebanon fall.

1literally, “oily

2This word also means “fertile field,” but see AE 750:8.

3The name “Mabarah” means “a crossing” in Hebrew.

4“Gibea” and “Gibeah” reflect different spellings in the Hebrew.
