Isaiah 54
1
Sing··aloud, O thou barren, who didst not give··birth; burst··forth into singing··aloud, and exult, thou that didst· not ·travail; for more are the sons of the desolate than the sons of her that is married, says Jehovah.
2
Enlarge the place of thy tent; and let them stretch forth the curtains of thy habitations; keep· not ·back; lengthen thy cords, and make··firm thy pegs;
3
for on the right··hand, and on the left, thou shalt break··forth; and thy seed shall possess the nations, and they shall cause the desolated cities to be dwelt in.
4
Fear not; for thou shalt not be··ashamed; and be not humiliated, for thou shalt not be brought to reproach; for thou shalt forget the shame of thine adolescence, and the reproach of thy widowhood thou shalt remember no more◦.
5
For thy Husband is thy Maker1; Jehovah of Armies is His name; and thy Redeemer is the Holy··One of Israel; the God of all the earth shall He be called.
6
For as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit has Jehovah called thee, and as a wife of youth, when◦ thou wast rejected, says thy God.
7
For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great compassions will I gather◦ thee.
8
In an inundation of rage I hid My face for a moment from thee; but with eternal mercy will I have··compassion on thee, says thy Redeemer Jehovah.
9
For the waters of Noah, this is for Me, that I promised that the waters of Noah should no more pass over the earth; so have I promised that I will not be··enraged against thee, nor rebuke thee.
10
For the mountains shall depart, and the hills shall be moved; but My mercy shall not depart from thee, and the covenant of My peace shall not be moved, says Jehovah who has··compassion on thee.
11
O thou afflicted, tossed by a tempest, not comforted, behold, I▵ will lay··down◦ thy stones with stibium2, and will found thee with sapphires.
12
And I will set thy windows3 of pyrope, and thy gates of stones of carbuncle4, and all thy borders with stones of delight;
13
and all thy sons shall be taught by Jehovah; and great shall be the peace of thy sons.
14
In justice thou shalt be established; thou shalt be··far from oppression, for thou shalt not fear, and far from dismay, for it shall not come··near to▵ thee.
15
Behold, leaguing··together they league··together with nothing from Me; whoever◦ leagues··together against thee shall fall on··account··of thee.
16
Behold, I▵ have created the craftsman who blows▵ the charcoal in the fire, and brings··forth a vessel for his work◦; and I▵ have created the destroyer to destroy◦.
17
Every weapon◦ formed against thee shall not prosper; and every tongue that rises··up against thee for the judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of Jehovah; and their justice is from◦ Me, says◦ Jehovah.
1“Here ‘Maker’ and ‘Husband’ are plural nouns because the proprium is the subject as well as [the Church]” (AC 253).
2or “antimony”; used to set precious stones (see AE 717:5), and also used as eye paint (see 2nd Kings 9:30)
3literally, “suns,” rendered both as “suns” and as “windows” in the Latin (see AC 655 and elsewhere)
4Both pyrope and carbuncle are types of garnet.
