Isaiah 9

1 For the obscurity shall not be such as was its oppression in the former time, when He reviled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but afterwards He will honor them by the way of the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; they who dwelt in the land of the shadow··of··death, on them has the light given··brightness.
3 Thou hast multiplied the nation; for him Thou hast magnified the gladness; they are··glad before Thee as with the gladness in the harvest, as they rejoice who part the spoil.
4 For the yoke of his burden, and the rod of his shoulder, the staff of the taskmaster over him, hast Thou broken, as the day of Midian.
5 For every mob shall be deranged by the earthquake; and the raiment rolled in bloods1 shall be for burning··up, even food for the fire.
6 For a Child is born to us, a Son is given to us; and the sovereignty2 shall be upon His shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, God, Hero, Father Everlasting, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the multiplying of His sovereignty and peace there shall be no end; on the throne of David, and on his kingdom, to establish her3, and to sustain her, in judgment and in justice, from now and even··to eternity; the zeal of Jehovah of Armies will do this.
8 The Lord has sent a word into Jacob, and it has fallen in Israel.
9 And all the people shall know—Ephraim, and he who dwells in Samaria—with pride and in greatness of heart, saying,
10 The bricks have fallen, but we will build with hewn stone; the mulberry··fig··trees are hewn··down, but we will change them for cedars.
11 Therefore Jehovah will raise up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and mingle his enemies together,
12 the Syrians from the east, and the Philistines from the west; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this His anger is not turned··back, but His hand is stretched out still.
13 And the people have not turned··back even··to Him who smote them, and of Jehovah of Armies they have not inquired.
14 And Jehovah shall cut··off from Israel the head and the tail, the palm branch and the pond··rush in one day.
15 The elder and they who lift up the face, he is the head; and the prophet who instructs falsely, he is the tail.
16 And the leaders of this people are causing them to go··astray; and they who are led by them shall be swallowed··up.4
17 Therefore the Lord shall not be··glad in their young··men, and on their orphans and their widows He shall have· no ·compassion; for every one of them is a hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this His anger is not turned··back, but His hand is stretched out still.
18 For wickedness burns as a fire; the briar and the thornbush it shall devour, and it shall kindle the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount··up in smoke rising··up.
19 Through the wrath of Jehovah of Armies the land is··darkened, and the people shall be as food for the fire; a man shall not pity his brother.
20 But he shall sever5 on the right, and be hungry; and he shall devour on the left, and not be··satisfied; a man shall devour the flesh of his own arm:
21 Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; together these shall be against Judah. For all this His anger is not turned··back, but His hand is stretched out still.

1“In general, ‘bloods’ signify all the falsities of doctrine, of life, and of worship, by means of which come the evils that destroy the church” (AE 329:30).

2literally, “princeship,” in this and the following verse

3The word for “kingdom” is feminine in Hebrew, just as the church, which is the Lord’s kingdom on earth, is the Lord’s bride and wife.

4The Hebrew here is unclear, but see Isaiah 3:12.

5that is, cut off pieces of meat
