Mark 8

1 In those days, the crowd being very··many and having nothing to eat, Jesus, calling··for His disciples, says to them,
2 I am moved··with··compassion1 for the crowd, because they have already stayed on with Me three days, and have nothing to eat;
3 and if I send· them ·away fasting to their··own house, they will faint on the way; for some of them came from afar··off.
4 And His disciples answered Him, From whence can anyone satisfy these with bread here in the wilderness?
5 And He asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven.
6 And He charged the crowd to recline on the earth; and taking the seven loaves of bread, when He had given··thanks, He broke, and gave to His disciples to set··before them, and they set· them ·before the crowd.
7 And they had a few little··fish; and blessing, He told them to set· them also ·before them.
8 And they ate, and were··satisfied; and they took··up the abundance of the fragments, seven baskets.
9 And they who had eaten were about four thousand; and He sent them away.
10 And straightway stepping into a ship with His disciples, He came into the parts of Dalmanutha.
11 And the Pharisees came··out, and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, tempting Him.
12 And sighing··deeply in His spirit, He says, Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen I say to··you, There shall no sign be given to this generation.
13 And having left them, He stepped again into the ship, and went··away to the other··side.
14 And they had forgotten to take bread, and except for one loaf, they had none with them in the ship.
15 And He charged them, saying, See, look··out for the leaven of the Pharisees, and the leaven of Herod.
16 And they reasoned to one··another, saying, It is because we have no bread.
17 And Jesus knowing says to them, Why do you reason, because you have no bread? Consider ye not yet, nor understand? Do you have your heart still hardened?
18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?
19 When I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up? They say to Him, Twelve.
20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up? And they said, Seven.
21 And He said to them, How is it that you do not understand?
22 And He comes to Bethsaida; and they bring to Him a blind man, and implore Him to touch him.
23 And having taken the blind man by the hand, He led him outside the village; and having spit into his eyes, and laid· hands ·on him, He asked him if· he saw ·anything.
24 And looking··up2, he said, I look··at men, that as trees I see them walking.
25 Then again He put His hands upon his eyes, and made him look··up; and he was restored, and looked··at all men clearly.
26 And He sent him to his house, saying, Neither enter into the village, nor tell it to anyone in the town.
27 And Jesus went out, and His disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and in the way He asked His disciples, saying to them, Who do men say that I am?
28 And they answered, John the Baptist; and some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.
29 And He says to them, But who do you say that I am? And Peter answering says to Him, Thou art the Christ.
30 And He admonished them that they should tell no··one about Him.
31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and the chief··priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise··again.
32 And He spoke the word openly. And Peter, taking· Him ·aside, began to rebuke Him.
33 But turning and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind Me, Satan; for thou art· not ·wise··in3 the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
34 And calling the crowd to Him, with His disciples, He said to them, Whoever wills to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
35 For whoever wills to save his soul shall lose it; but whoever shall lose his soul for My sake and the gospel’s, he shall save it.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and cause··the··loss of his soul?
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?4
38 For whoever shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of Man be ashamed, when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.

1literally, “moved viscerally”; see AE 622:10 and elsewhere

2The Greek verb here also means “receive one’s sight,” though the Heavenly Doctrine renders it as “look up” in this verse (AE 239:20).

3This word can also mean “have a taste for.”

4The Heavenly Doctrine, in quoting this verse, adds this clarification: “What price shall a man give, sufficient for the redemption of his soul?” (AR 556, AE 328:19, 750:5)
