Psalms 2

1 Why do the nations fume,And the peoples meditate··on emptiness?
2 The kings of the earth stood··forth, and the rulers consulted together,Against Jehovah, and against His anointed.
3 Let us pull··off their bonds,And cast··away from us their ropes.
4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold· them ·in··derision.
5 Then He shall speak to them in His anger,And in His fierceness vex them.
6 But I have anointed1 My kingUpon Zion, the mountain of My holiness.
7 I will declare2 the statute; Jehovah has said to me3,Thou art My Son; today I have begotten Thee.
8 Ask of Me, and I will give the nations for Thine inheritance,And for Thy possession the ends of the earth.
9 Thou shalt break· them ·up with a scepter of iron;As a vessel of a potter Thou shalt scatter them.
10 And now, O ye kings, have··intelligence;Be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve Jehovah with fear,And rejoice with quivering.
12 Kiss the Son, lest He be··angry,And you perish in the way,For His anger will burn for··but a··little.Happy are all they who confide in Him.

1literally, “poured upon,”; but the Latin has “anointed” (unxi) in AC 9954:14, AR 612:4, TCR 101e, and elsewhere.

2literally, “number” or “recount”

3Although it may appear that Jehovah is speaking to David about David, the capitalization of pronouns in the Heavenly Doctrine suggests that David is receiving a prophecy about the Lord (even in the literal sense) with Thou and Thee, then referring to the Lord, who was to come.
